Touratech Hard Parts for a BMW R1100GS

Introduction

The BMW R1100GS has two weak points in its design that in a tipover or under heavy load can cause more damage than they ought to. To reinforce the vulnerable parts of the frame, TouraTech makes Hard Parts. This web page illustrates how to install them.

On the R1100GS, the bottom of the rear subframe is bolted to the transmission case on the left and right sides. There's athyreaded hole that receives a bolt through the subframe tube. However, the load is carried only on one side of the frame tube. This applies a torque to the mounting point. Under heavy load or repeated stress, the mounting point cracks and has been known to break off. The Touratech Hard Parts reinforce this by supporting the bolts on the outsides of the tube as well. Here are instructions for fitting the Hard Parts to the Left and Right sides of the motorcycle. The Touratech instructions say to install the left one first, and then the right one.

The rear subframe on the R1150GS were redesigned to deal with this problem, so the Touratech Hard Parts aren't needed.

On all BMW motorcycles with Telelever including the R1100GS and the R1150GS, lugs on the aluminum casting under the gas tank engage with logs on the triple tree. Under a hard impact to one side or the other, the lugs can break off or other parts can be damaged. The Touratech Hard Part for the Telelever limits the steering head movement with rubber snubbers fitted directly to the Telelever. Here are instructions for fitting the Hard Parts to the Telelever.
