Rooting Order
It's always more fun to watch a hockey game when you have a personal stake in the outcone. If your friend is playing on one of the teams, or one of the teams is from your city, then you know whom to cheer for. But what do you do when you don't know anyone or any of the teams? Thus my Rooting Orders.

Here are my rooting orders for various hockey leagues. They show whom I will cheer for depending on who is playing. If two teams are on the list, I'll cheer for the one higher up.

NHL

  1. San Jose Sharks - I used to live in San Jose; it's the closest NHL team to San Francisco.
  2. Anaheim Mighty Ducks - My boyfriend grew up in Anaheim.
  3. Colorado Avalanche - I used to live in Denver.
  4. Toronto Maple Leafs - I have a bunch of hockey player friends in Toronto.
  5. New Jersey Devils - After I bought my goalie pads, I found out who Martin Brodeur is.
  6. Home Team - The general rule is, if you're from out of town and don't otherwise have a favorite, cheer for the home team.

College Hockey

  1. Cal Berkeley - That's the closest team to where I live, and a friend of mine went to school there.
  2. Stanford - They're nearby, too.
  3. San Jose State - Okay, them, too.
  4. Home team

IGLIHA

  1. Ottawa Senators - At Friendship '99 they invited me to play in net for them. We played very well together and took the Silver Medal.
  2. Seattle - They invited me to play for them at a tournament once. That's worth a high place on the Rooting Order.
  3. LA Blades - They're nice people, and they always beat the Policemen/Firemen team in their league.
  4. Toronto - An all-around great team, and their goalie has the same kinds of pads I do. (No, it's not that I have the same pads he has. I got mine first, so he has the same pads I do. But he stopped to pose for me when I wanted to take his picture, so that's worth a spot on the list.)
  5. Boston - Nice people and a very well-disciplined team. Worth cheering for.
  6. Home team
  7. Any team
  8. San Francisco Earthquakes*

* I won't root for any team that places political correctness and and "inclusiveness" ahead of team-player loyalty. After I helped form the team, worked hard to make sure they got a slot in the Amsterdam Gay Games, and played in three tournaments with them, they dumped me in favor of a less skilled straight goalie. I have since found out they they similarly dumped one of their most skilled forwards ... while asking his boyfriend to help them get organized! I will root for any team that plays against them.
