goalie stick

A goalie stick is similar to a regular hockey stick except that the balde is wider and extends upwards about 20" from the heel.

Sizing

Standing in your skates, hold the stick vertically in front of you. The butt end of the stick should just reach your chin. Don't cut the stick down; it's manufactured to be properly balanced. If you need a shorter one, buy a shorter one.

Younger kids 7 to 9 years of age should try to get a stick with a straight blade. A curved stick is more difficult to keep flat on the ice.

Taping

Tape your goalie stick with white tape. It protects the stick itself from cracking and soaking up water, and it make sit more difficult for players to tell quite where it is. Wrap extra tape on the butt end of the stick to make a knob. The knob serves three purposes. First, it prevents you losing the stick when you poke the puck. Second, it makes it easier to pick up the stick if you should drop it. Third, if you should butt-end a player with it, it won’t make as big a bruise.
